What to Expect From Growth Hormone Therapy

The response to growth hormone (GH) therapy may depend on the growth condition the child has. Every child is different. The goal of GH therapy is to get your child within the normal height range for his or her age and gender.

A child's response to GH can depend on factors related to his or her own body:

  • If the child's growth hormone level is low before therapy
  • The child's age
  • How close to puberty the child is
  • Other biological and genetic factors

Your child's response to GH may also depend on the dose of growth hormone used and the length of time on treatment.

GH therapy is often given by a single injection just below the skin once a day, usually in the evening. The injection is done at home, either by the child or the parents. A doctor or nurse will help you and your child with the first injection and will also train you on how to inject. It's important to stay on the treatment schedule prescribed by your doctor.
